Back in Motion: Returning to Bowling Safely

Last updated: Friday November 2, 2018 3:17PM

A message from our sponsor:

With summer fast approaching, the new cricket season is well underway. Managing workload, especially for bowlers, can greatly reduce the risk of injury.

The cricket Australia guidelines have been designed as a tool for elite players through to our weekend fifth graders. The guidelines are summarised in the table below:

*Despite the CA guidelines we recommend that players shouldn’t exceed 170 balls/week. A large recent research study concluded that fast bowlers delivering >170 balls/week had a 1.45x injury risk (i.e. were 45% more likely to sustain an injury)

 Remember…

Weekly deliveries need to match your average over the past 4 weeks

  • Ramp training up leading up to games/tournaments
  • No weeks of no bowling!

Training pace needs to mimic game day

  • Both run up and delivery speed (bowl less at the same speed, not more at half speed!)
